How to Avoid Dating Games

    Set Boundaries

    • 1). Vow to put off sex. This is a major tripping-up point for a lot of people. Set a hard timeline, such as six weeks, and then stick to it. This will help you get past the pure physical attraction to a potential mate and look at some of the other traits.

    • 2). Write out a list of the traits you are looking for in a mate. This will help you to be honest both with yourself and your dates. For example, if you enjoy the outdoors, you will likely want to look for someone who also enjoys outdoor activities.

    • 3). Write out another list, this time of the traits you do not want in a mate. Decide what the deal-breakers will be. One good rule of thumb is to avoid alcoholics and drug abusers, for example. Addicts are notorious for being unable to avoid game playing in relationships, such as telling lies.

    • 4). Be honest. This is the most important part of avoiding relationship games. Be straightforward with your dates if you want them to do the same for you. This also means being honest with yourself as well. Know who you are and what you want out of a relationship, and know what you are willing to compromise on.

    • 5). Don't be afraid to cut it off. Even if you have been on a number dates with this person and you really like him or her, don't hesitate to make a clean break if things aren't working out. People aren't likely to change in any drastic way and if your date exhibits any of the behaviors you don't want in a mate, those behaviors are only likely to get worse. Don't waste your time trying to fix something you know isn't going to work.
