- 1). Make or purchase sugar paste. Recipes can be found online or icings can be purchased in many hobby stores.
- 2). Prepare a large, flat work surface. The surface should be clean and dry. Dust surface generously with corn starch or rub with vegetable shortening to prevent icing from sticking. Fondant rolling mats are available to help prevent sticking.
- 3). Use icing colors to tint paste. Apply color in small amounts using toothpicks and knead until color is even throughout. Repeat if necessary. Do not use food coloring drops as the liquid will dissolve the sugar in the icing.
- 4). Roll icing with rolling pin on work surface, as instructed for your desired task.
- 5). Follow directions to cover cake or create desired decoration. Cover all pieces that are not being used with plastic wrap to prevent drying.
