Window Improvement: Cleaning Your Roller Blinds

Like curtains, window blinds also need to be cleaned. But here's the upside: You only spend a fraction of the time cleaning your roller blinds as compared to the long hours you spend washing those large, unwieldy pieces of cloth.

And you don't have to wash your blinds as often as twice a month!

But before you begin cleaning your window blinds, you need to determine the kind of material they are made of before soaking them in soap suds. Or else, you risk the possibility of spending more (i.e., you need to purchase a new set!). With this in mind, you'll know exactly how to clean them well.

There are actually different ways of cleaning your window blinds. You can do spot cleaning, a total €wash-over,€ or bring them to dry cleaning professionals if you're unsure of their material (To be sure you can confirm this with the product manual or your local distributor).

Spot cleaning for those not-so-dirty roller blinds

Roller blinds eventually become dull or drab because of the dust and other dirt that stick to them. That is why it is important to clean them once you notice a change in their original color.

Spot cleaning simply means removing spots of dirt from your roller blinds without the need to wash the whole assembly. This is usually done for blinds that are not washable.

For your spot cleaning session, simply prepare your own cleansing solution which is made of warm water and mild laundry detergent. We advise you to use a mild solution to avoid the risk of discoloring or worse, permanently damaging your blinds.

Use a brush with soft bristles or a soft cloth soaked in the solution to remove the dirt or stains that have accumulated on your roller blinds. Just make sure that you squeeze the excess water from your toothbrush or cloth before using them.

Once done, wipe off the brushed spots with clean water and dry.

Washable Roller Blinds

You don't need to worry when doing the cleaning yourself if you're sure that your roller blinds are washable. This means that you can wash the blinds in flowing water, soak them or dry clean without running the risk of damaging the material.

You can use your vacuum cleaner to initially remove the dust and other stains that have accumulated on the window blinds. If you have a vacuum cleaner that has special accessories, you can do a better cleaning job since you can easily get into the nook and crannies of the roller blinds assembly.

Once you're done with the vacuum cleaning part, you can now put the roller blinds in a large basin (or a bath tub, if you have one) filled with lukewarm water and mild powdered laundry soap. Use a laundry brush with soft bristles to gently scrub off those stubborn stains and dust particles which have hardened over time.

Once you're done brushing your window blinds, rinse them well with clean water and then let them dry under the shade.

You're roller blinds are now good as new!
