Safety for Teens In NY
New York's Graduated Driver License (GDL)
A teen must be at least 16 years old to obtain a junior learner permit and must hold that permit for 6 months. During this time, the teen has the following provisions:
Must practice driving with a licensed driver for at least 50 hours, with 15 hours at night
Must not drive between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. (this provision differs depending on region of state)
Must wear safety belts (passengers must buckle up too)
To move up to a junior license and drive unsupervised, a teen must be at least 16 and 6 months. In this stage, a New York teen has the following provisions:
Only one passenger allowed unless accompanied by parent
Driving restricted from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Safety belts must be worn by driver and all passengers
At age 17, a teen may apply for a regular license with no restrictions.

Susan received her master's degree in political science from the Flinders University of South Australia and completed a graduate program in women and public policy at Rockefeller College. She has Bachelor of Arts in English literature from Marquette University.
Susan formerly held the positions of director of communications for Albany County and assistant director of communications for the New York State Senate. She was the director of economic development for Albany County and managed a non-profit advocacy organization. She served as president of the Women's Press Club of New York State, president of eba Dance Theater and Legislation Chair for the New York State PTA.
