Lamborghini Diablo Safety Features

The now-retired Lamborghini Diablo rocketed across the roads with an exhilaration of speed and handling, addressing its primary goal of performance. Few other cars could race head-to-head with such a vehicle. As a "supercar," safety was important, and Lamborghini implemented several safety features into this coveted sports car. - The Lamborghini Diablo featured anti-lock brakes (ABS). These brakes are designed to maintain control during hard braking scenarios. When braking hard, especially on icy or wet roads, wheels may "lock up" and elicit a skid, during which time traction is lost and braking is severely impaired. ABS works to keep pressure at the optimum point to prevent the wheels from locking up, which creates the effect of rapidly pumping the breaks to maximize traction.
- Another safety feature of the Lamborghini Diablo were airbags. The second a significant frontal impact occurs, measured by a sensor to determine severity, an explosive charge rapidly forces air pressures into study bags residing in the steering column and passenger side dashboard. This explosion inflates the airbags in a small fraction of a second, protecting occupants from dangerous impacts with the steering column, dashboard and windshield.
- The Lamborghini Diablo contained seat belt pretensioners, which function similarly to airbags in that a sensor allows a small detonation to occur to initiate the safety feature. With seat belts, this serves to pull the seat belt, thereby removing any slack to insure greater restraint of the occupant and optimal posture.
