3 Steps to Taking the Awkward Out of Being Home
Is this your first trip home as an out gay man? Are you the only out person in your family? Navigate your way through a trip home.
Be Yourself
It's not always a comfortable situation being the only gay guy in the room. We've all been the "only one" at one time or another, even around family. Be yourself. Even if you feel as if you can't fully relate to everyone in the room, make an attempt to interact and make connections.
Communicate
Part of making a connection and feeling more comfortable in a non-gay home environment is by sharing details about your life and being open about your feelings. Engage in conversations and try not to treat your sexuality as a forbidden topic.
Speak Up
Is your brother slinging gay jokes? Is everyone else free to talk about their partners except for you? Establish your boundaries. Express your willingness to entertain their stories, but be firm about being able to share yours.
