Her Cheating Heart

Dear Emily,
I am 21 years old and I feel so horrible that I don't know what to do. I have been living with my girlfriend for over a year. We are very much in love and committed…or so I thought. Last Saturday, I got very drunk, met a hot girl and made out with her all night in my car. It was amazing, but I feel so guilty. Should I tell her? I just wish I could turn back time!
Remorseful in Rhode Island

Dear Remorseful,

Settle down there, Cher.
You made your bed and now you must lie in it.

Life's a bitch and you need to tell her. I understand that what she doesn't know won't hurt her, but where is the growth opportunity in that? There's opportunity in every problem!

If you decide to keep this from her, your relationship will suffer for it. If you tell her the truth, there is a chance she will leave you. But if you don't, the relationship will no longer have integrity. And intimacy is based on truth and honesty. Do you want to have mediocre sex with her forever? You are allowed mistakes in life, but it is the responsibility you have to yourself to clean up your mess.

You're young enough to be going out and having fun. You may want to consider if you are ready and willing to be in a deep committed relationship at this point. Perhaps, if you can't stay faithful, you should let her go. Part of maturing is making painful decisions that are ultimately best for us, even if it means giving something up.
