How Many Gays, Lesbians & Bisexuals are in the US Military?

Question: How Many Gays, Lesbians & Bisexuals are in the US Military?

The official policy of the United States military around gays and lesbians is "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." But if someone is out or found out to be gay, lesbian or bisexual, they will be discharged from military service. So, how many people does this affect?

Answer: Despite the miltary's policy not allowing them to serve openly, gay, lesbian and bisexual soldiers are involved in all branches of the US military.

According to a study by the Williams Institute in January 2010, 66,000 gay, lesbian and bisexual service members are enlisted in the United States Military. That makes up approximately 2.2% of military personnel.

The study also found that although women only comprise about 14% of active duty soldiers, 43% of lesbian, gay and bi soldiers are women.

Approximately 13,000 LGB people are serving on active duty (comprising 0.9% of all active duty personnel) while nearly 53,000 are serving in the guard and reserve forces (3.4%).
