Motorcycle Safety Tips

The roads are a very dangerous place to be on at the best of times. Pointing fingers at any specific parties would not be fair. That is why we are rather going to be focusing our attention on what safety precautions one should take before embarking on your journey, more specifically what motorcycle drivers should consider when it comes to being safe on the roads. A lot of the road safety attention is focused on motorists who own cars rather than motorcycles, that's why we are shifting the focus a little in this article.

The Gear

When you get on a motorcycle your body is much more vulnerable and likely to take a battering when you are involved in any sort of accident. That is why you should wear the correct safety equipment including a helmet and a protective padded jacket at least. Protecting your head, eyes and skin are crucial. This will help you to avoid the proverbial speed bumps of sustaining unnecessary injuries during accidents.

Do your checks

It is of absolute importance to do the basic checks on your bike before you hit the road. As is standard protocol with driving a car (even if no-one really does this), it is essential that check things like tire pressure, breaks, lights and all the other important things that keep you and your bike safe on the road. A small technical error can cause massive disaster when it comes to riding a motorbike.

Avoid the big guys

Always avoid driving next to large trucks that tend to have big blind spots. These trucks will change lanes or overtake someone without knowing that you are next to them and wipe you and your precious motorcycle out for good.

Safe following distance

This counts for cars and bikes alike. Maintaining a safe following distance will allow for plenty of reaction time should anything funny happen in front of you. It will also dramatically reduce your chances of making an accident. When you leave enough space between you and the vehicles around you on the road, you can drive with more confidence knowing that you are increasing the safety you travel with.

Passengers

Having a passenger on the back of your motorcycle is different to driving your kids around in your giant SUV. Just because of the size of the motorbike, your ride would be much different with a passenger on the back because of the extra weight. It is advisable to have a slow cruise around the block to get the hang of it before going on the roads. Always remind your passenger to sit still and to keep their hands around you at all times.
