Texas Driver and Traffic Safety Education
- Passing the Texas Driver and Traffic Safety Education program, Module One, is a prerequisite for obtaining an instructional permit for the learner driver. This covers traffic laws and the driver licensing system and lasts at least 360 minutes in its entirety.
- After passing Module One, the teenager must take at least seven hours of behind-the-wheel instruction followed by seven hours of observation of their driving. Options for the in-car instructional phase include using some hours of simulator time. The in-car phase encompasses Modules Two through 12, and includes some classroom examinations.
- Schools can opt to use simulators in Module Two and can also opt to teach different variations of the course. The options are teaching the core 32-hour course, a 14-hour in-car only course, a 32-hour classroom program, a school day credit program lasting 56 hours, a non-school day program also lasting 56 hours and a multi-phase school day program with 40 hours of classroom instruction, 12 hours of in-car instruction and observation and 12 hours of simulator time.
