Idle Problems in the Polaris Sportsman
- Idling problems could from some non-serious operational problems. Check to ensure you have pushed the clutch all the way in and shifted the transmission into neutral, and that both the gas and oil tanks contain enough fuel. All Polaris Sportsman quads take either leaded or unleaded gasoline with a pump octane rating of 87 or higher. Type of engine oil varies according to the specific Sportsman model; check the "Maintenance" section of each Polaris' owner's manual for details.
- Even if fuel levels are adequate, fuel could still cause idling problems if the condition of the fuel is poor.Check the condition of any gasoline within the tank. If it has become gummy or watery, drain the tank and refill it with gasoline. To remove stale or ineffective oil, perform an oil change.
- Low battery voltage could also cause idling or running problems for a Polaris Sportsman. For most models, the battery is located either beneath the seat or the steering column. Remove the battery, and check to ensure it is not damaged; if so, replace it with a battery of the same voltage. Otherwise, clean the battery terminals and charge the battery fully before reinstallation.
- The spark plugs are a major ignition system element that could cause also idling problems in any Polaris Sportsman. Specifics regarding the amount of plugs, the type and the spark plug gap for a particular model varies according to each Sportsman. The manual for each model includes this information in its "Maintenance" section. In general, however, remove each spark plug, located in each of a Sportsman's engine cylinders. If a plug has a burnt or damaged insulator tip, replace it with the same type of plug. Additionally, measure and check to ensure you have set the spark plug gap to the width stipulated in your particular Sportsman's manual.
- If, after you have performed troubleshooting on these potential problems, the Sportsman still experiences idling problems, Polaris instructs owners to take the quad to the shop. The ATV may be experiencing serious major mechanical or engine problems best repaired by a certified professional with the right tools and experience to do it correctly.
