A Lesbian"s Guide to Online Dating
KB: Where are good places to meet for the first time?
MB: If you both drink, sometimes it?s nice to meet at a cozy bar. (Not the big nightclub!) Try meeting for coffee or a drink first. You don't want to be stuck having an entire dinner with someone who bores you after the first 10 minutes. If you don't live in the same town, meet halfway somewhere. Always meet at a public place for the first date.
And be honest! If you don't want to see them again, just tell them that it was nice meeting them, and wish them good luck.
KB: How do you determine if there will be a second date?
MB: Usually there is no second date, but on the rare occasion that you actually are attracted and hit it off with someone that you meet online, it will be obvious to both of you. I have a friend who disagrees. She thinks you should always have a second date, because it?s hard to really get a sense of someone in one meeting.
KB: What are good topics for the first date?
MB: I like to talk about 'dating', find out what the other person's experiences are. Then there are the usual what do you do, and where did you grow up questions. I like to find out if we know any people in common. Funny stories are good. I also like to find out how available they actually are. Did they just break up with their last relationship a week ago? Are they going through some personal crisis? Do they get along with their family?
KB: Any other dating tips you want to share?
MB: Give it a shot! I've gone out on about 12 dates this year from people I've met online. Nothing terribly tragic has happened, and I've even made a few friends, had a little romance, and gotten some good stories to tell.
