New Hampshire Drivers Education

    Age Requirements

    • According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, New Hampshire does not require novice drivers to obtain a learner's permit. In that state, a beginning driver needs to be at least 15½ years old and have a licensed driver, age 25 or older, in the front seat during driving practice.

    Driver's Education Course Requirements

    • An accredited driver's education course in New Hampshire is required to provide 30 hours of classroom instruction with a certified instructor, 10 hours of driving with a certified instructor, and 6 hours of observation with a certified instructor. Upon completion of the course, a Driver Education Certificate is given to the Division of Motor Vehicles for licensing purposes.

    Additional Licensing Requirements

    • In addition to a driver's education course, New Hampshire residents under the age of 18 are required to log 40 hours of additional, supervised driving time with a licensed adult, age 25 or over. This additional practice must be logged on a Driver's Out-of-Class log sheet, which will be turned in to the Division of Motor Vehicles when the driver wishes to obtain a license.

    Youth Operator License

    • New Hampshire residents can obtain a restricted Youth Operator driver's license at the age of 16. If a prospective driver between the ages of 16 and 18 wishes to obtain this license, the Division of Motor Vehicles requires proof of completion of a driver's education course.

The restrictions associated with the Youth Operator's license are in place from age 16 to 18.

During this period, the operator may not drive between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., have more passengers in the vehicle than seat belts, and have more than one non-family member in the vehicle for 6 months after obtaining a license.

    Accredited Driver's Education Schools

    • In addition to class offerings at many high schools throughout the state, there are 66 commercial driver's education schools throughout New Hampshire.

The New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles maintains a listing of accredited driver's education schools located in the state on their website.
