How to Level a Cement Floor

    • 1). Clean the floor. Sweep up and then scrub the floor with water to get any dust and dirt out. Let the floor dry for a day to ensure that all the moisture is gone.

    • 2). Paint on a latex bonding paint that will allow the new flooring to adhere to the old concrete. Use a paintbrush and cover the entire floor.

    • 3). Ask helpers to mix the self-leveling compound while you pour. The mix dries quickly so you need help to ensure that you can cover the entire floor before the mix dries. Follow the directions on the package as to approximate total quantity needed for the size floor you have. Mix one bucket at a time so that you don't end up with too much left over at the end.

    • 4). Pour the mix from the bucket, starting in a back corner of the room or area. Keep your back to the door, always working closer to it as you add more buckets of compound. This way you won't end up stuck in a corner. The self-leveling mix will do as its name suggests and level out, finding through gravity the lower points in the floor first and filling them in.

    • 5). Let the floor dry for the recommended amount of time, which should be at a minimum one full day to be certain it is fully cured.
