Heavy Duty Trucks: Auto Shift Vs. Straight Shift

    Automatic Pros

    • With an automatic transmission, the driver only needs to worry about putting the truck into drive, reverse, park and neutral. This is the simplest transmission to operate. As the truck goes faster, the transmission automatically shifts into a higher gear. When the truck slows, it automatically shifts into a lower gear.

    Automatic Cons

    • Automatic transmissions require more power, hence they consume gas more quickly than a manual transmission. An automatic also requires more frequent and complicated maintenance. They are also more expensive.

    Manual Pros

    • A manual transmission does not go consume gas as quickly as an automatic. It also accelerates faster and needs less maintenance. A manual transmission gives a driver more control of the car, a benefit when taking a heavy duty truck off-road.

    Manual Cons

    • Driving with a manual transmission requires both feet, as a clutch is involved. Driving in areas with traffic requires constant shifting, which some drivers may find tedious and distracting.
