How to Fix a Broken Tailgate Handle on a 2001 Nissan Frontier
- 1). Open the tailgate of your Nissan and locate the access plate in the center of the tailgate. Remove the two access screws from the cover with a Phillips screwdriver and lift the access cover off, setting it aside for reuse later.
- 2). Locate the latch rod just inside the opening. Turn the plastic clip, snapping it off the latch rod. Lift the rod out of the hole in the center of the clip, leaving the clip in place. Lay the rod aside.
- 3). Remove the two retaining nuts on the studs just inside the access hole with a socket and ratchet. Remove the handle assemble from the opposite side of the tailgate.
- 4). Install a new handle assembly into the access hole, install the two retaining nut and tighten them with a socket and ratchet. Do not over tighten the nuts or you will damage the handle assembly. Push the latch rod into the hole in the center of the plastic retaining clip. Turn it until it snaps onto the rod.
- 5). Install the access cover onto the tailgate and insert the two retaining screws. Tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Close the tailgate and open it again to be sure the latch and handle are functioning properly.
