How to Grow Riccia fluitans
- 1). Collect Riccia fluitans in the wild or from another aquarium. This plant is quite common, so aquarium supply stores do not typically stock it.
- 2). Clear your aquarium of competing plants and animals. Duckweed and other surface-dwelling plants can often crowd out Riccia fluitans. Aggressive plant eaters can also prevent Riccia fluitans from thriving.
- 3). Tie the Riccia fluitans plant to a piece of gravel with a small length of transparent fishing line. The plant does not require a substrate, and this step is necessary only if you wish to keep Riccia fluitans in a particular location. You will typically anchor the plant in place to provide shelter for small fry.
- 4). Provide Riccia fluitans with bright artificial lighting, typically at least 3 watts for every gallon of water in your aquarium. Maintain the temperature in your aquarium at room temperature. The water pH should be approximately 7.0. This plant can tolerate hard water.
- 5). Prune Riccia fluitans plants with a sharp pair of scissors. This plant can quickly cover the surface of your aquarium if you allow it do so. Cut off sections of the Riccia fluitans to propagate it elsewhere.
