- 1). Plant the shrub in spring or fall at least 2 feet from the nearest plant.
- 2). Fertilize the shrub with at least a 1-inch layer of compost around the base of each shrub every spring, and then apply a fresh layer of mulch to reduce weed growth and retain moisture.
- 3). Water the shrubs weekly if there is less than 1 inch of rain in a week's time. Water the shrub thoroughly each time and fully saturate the roots to promote deep root growth.
- 4). Pinch dead or dying flowers off the shrub throughout the spring to encourage a second flowering.
- 5). Cut dead or diseased branches any time of year. Prune the shrubs back in the early spring to promote flowering, reduce the shrub's size as needed, and cultivate its shape.
