How to Prevent Crabgrass Weeds

    • 1). Find out when crabgrass emerges in your area, as spraying just before the time of germination will prevent the spread. Crabgrass grows when the ground reaches a temperature from 55 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit for at least seven consecutive days. Check with your county's agricultural department to determine the best time to begin treating the grass.

    • 2). Rake your lawn to clear it of all obstructions, such as loose leaves.

    • 3). Spray your entire lawn with a pre-emergent herbicide, which will stop the seeds from germinating when they reach the proper temperature.

    • 4). Mow your lawn regularly, keeping it between 2 and 3 inches in height for optimum crabgrass control.

    • 5). Apply a non-selective herbicide directly to crabgrass as soon as you spot it to prevent it from spreading further.
