DIY Canopy Ideas for a Deck

    Bamboo Canopy

    • For a bamboo canopy, you need four bamboo fence poles or sticks and a large piece of water-resistant canvas. Purchase bamboo sticks that are tall enough to make the canopy without having the fabric rub against the top of your head. Keep in mind that the fabric will naturally dip down in the middle, making the center slightly shorter than the edges. Dig a small hole at one corner of your deck and place the bamboo stick in the center of the hole. Fill it in with dirt, gravel or concrete to secure the bamboo to the ground. Repeat on the other corners of the deck. Anchor the sticks to the ground with tent pins. Use a small clamp to attach one corner of the canvas to one stick and repeat with each corner of the canvas.

    PVC Pipe

    • Create a large frame for your canopy from pieces of PVC pipe. Measure the size of the deck first and then purchase two pieces of pipe the same length as the deck and two pieces the same size as the width. Attach the four pieces with T-shaped pipe fittings, making sure the bottom of the "T" faces toward the ground. Decide on the height of the canopy and purchase four pieces of PVC pipe the same length. Attach those pipes to the bottom of the T-shaped pipe fitting. Secure the pipes in the ground on the sides of the deck and drape the canopy material over the top.

    Tent Poles

    • Turn poles from an old tent or screen room into a new canopy for your deck. Secure the poles in the ground on either side of the deck. If the deck is raised off the ground, then use tent anchors to secure the tent poles to the ground or clamps to attach the poles to the deck. Connect the poles as if you were setting up the tent. Drape the fabric over the finished frame for more sun protection.

    Screw-in Hooks

    • If your deck has walls or runs in between the house and garage, then opt for basic screw-in hooks to display your canopy. Screw one hook into one corner of the wall or one side of the house and place a second at the opposite corner. Attach two more hooks on the garage or opposite wall. Drape a large piece of fabric from one corner hook to the other and then across the space.
