Why the Christian Community Should Support the Repeal of Don"t Ask, Don"t Tell

There comes a time when we have to realize that many of our old ways of doing things are archaic and actually, unjust.
This is the case of the current, Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy.
We live in a nation which is said to stand up for the rights of the individual and minorities.
We are also a pluralistic society where all are supposed to be welcome to live their lives freely.
It goes against our basic principles as a diverse, pluralistic society to deny individuals the right to be in the armed forces because of their sexual orientation, whether people agree with it or not.
It was only 50 years ago that African Americans were not allowed to serve with White Americans.
Let's not repeat the same mistakes twice, and realize later on our own foolishness and discrimination.
In regards to Christianity, I know this can be a tricky and confusing issue for some.
However, what people have to get through their minds is that what you think is immoral does not necessarily need to be the law of the land.
You may think that everyone should be Christian, Muslim, Jewish, etc.
However, you do not make that the policy of the land.
You may think that everyone should pray with their children; however, you do not make that a national requirement for parenthood.
You may love to see the 10 commandments, but you do not force them to be posted in every court house and school.
Christians should be ones that stand up for the rights of all people and fight all discrimination, whether they agree morally or religiously with those individuals or not.
It is almost comical to hear some American Christians talk about the discrimination they face and then turn around and try to discriminate against others.
Perhaps, the people who are doing this cannot see the double standard, but to the rest of the society it reeks of hypocrisy.
Whether you agree with homosexuality or not is irrelevant to the discussion, the point is that we are a diverse, pluralistic society where people who are facing discrimination against need to be helped.
If you do not seek equality and justice in one way, than who says that the next target of prejudice and injustice may not be yourself.
As Dr.
King stated...
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
