How to Construct a Concrete Block Wall
- 1). Ensure a footing is in place to support the concrete blocks. The footing should be double the width of the block wall. Use a measuring tape to measure the area where you intend to construct the wall. Write down the measurements. Use a hammer to drive stakes into the ground along the corners of the intended wall.
- 2). Purchase mortar mix, concrete blocks and other supplies you need at a home service center. Discuss the wall measurements with a representative at the center, who can help you determine the proper amount of mortar and concrete blocks you will need.
- 3). Tie one end of a line to one stake and string the line between the stakes. Position a plumb bob 3 or 4 inches from where the tied string interconnects at the staked corners to make sure the concrete wall block corners are even, or level.
- 4). Mix the mortar in a bucket according to the manufacturer's instructions. Scoop up the mortar onto a trowel and apply a 1-inch layer to the surface of the footing. Position the corner concrete blocks onto the surface of the footing first. Scrape off any excess mortar with the trowel. Check the corner blocks with a level to ensure they are even. Use the back of the trowel to tap down the blocks to better secure them into place.
- 5). Install blocks on either side of the corner until you complete the row. Smear mortar on top of the installed bricks and add the next row. Continue to add rows using this technique until the wall is the desired height.
